I'm still here...

Things have been quiet for the most part the last few weeks or so.  I've been spending most of my last few weeks dealing with Plasma and Oxygas cutting machines long distance.  Most of what has been running through my head lately is the same type of scattered observations that make up my internal monologue.

  • I've got Connecticut the week after next...if it wasn't for business...I would be hard pressed to come up with a reason to go there in the first place.
  • I have come to the conclusion that I like bluetooth cellphone headsets.  Especially when you don't notice them at first, and you assume that what you are seeing is some lunatic talking out loud to the voices in their brain.  It seems to me to be an accurate portrayal of the world :)
  • If DAZ would make a human realistic figure that was a low on resource use as Aiko 3, I would be a very happy panda.  V4 sure as hell ain't it...it definitely uses a lot of horses....I'm definitely apprehensive of what this is going to mean for the upcoming Micheal upgrade.
  • I don't watch all that much in the way of televison...but I have definitely become enthralled with "The Wire".
  • I am cursing the gods over the fact that Coca Cola discontinued Black Cherry Vanilla Coke.  Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper is a decent substitute...but BCVC was my favorite soda of all time.  When I am in an experimental mood, I think I may try to put together my own.  When I get it done, I will post the recipe :)
  • The one fashion weakness I have is for wristwatches...and I must admit that I absolutely lust after the Tag Heuer Carrera. Absolutely flawless workmanship from what I have seen.  It's just a pity it costs so damn much.
  • And furthermore I curse everyone who was in favor of making my section of Indiana go to Eastern Daylight Time.  We are 90 fucking miles from Chicago, we do not need to be on the same time as New York City.
  • I'm trying to get over the fact that Requiem is coming up on it's 1000th comic.  In retrospect, it kinda blows my mind a bit, looking at all the different pieces of software I have went through so far in the making of this nihilistic epic ;)
  • I am noting with a great deal of sadness that my local area is slowly running out of abandoned buildings to explore.  Urban renewal has taken most of the cool ones away.
  • The techie side of me is mourning the discontinuation of the Dell Axim PDA line.  Probably the best thing to come out of Dell too...a great value for the money.  The thing is it's all about the smart phone now.  Despite the fact that they are underpowered on the CPU side and you can't check your notes and contact list while you are talking to someone...or the fact that not everybody wants or needs a cellphone....Still ebay has a number of them in good shape still available...and there is an interesting one at HP that looks good too...It may be time for me to step up to something like a Treo eventually.  The idea of broadband conectivity with an actual usable pda type platform is very appealing to me.
  • Does anybody do a smartphone that has an 802.11b connnection in it?

Do you know of anybody who has put together a model of a zippo lighter?  (And one that doesn't cost in excess of $50?)  I can find disposable ones...but they don't look quite right for what I want to do.

A test of an upcoming comic panel...cut 'cause this is a little big...

I may end up doing a version of this as a print at some future date.

Overall, getting back to work has been pretty righteous...

Now if only I knew why the ball of each foot feels like someone is taking a makita cordless drill on a one way trip through them, I would be in business. I think what I am feeling right now is indirectly caused by the aproximately seven years I spent hoping on and off fork lifts.  Only six more weeks or so and I am in my normal assignment...sometimes training sucks.

At any rate, I've been dealing with industrial lasers for the last couple of weeks or so, I am definitely looking forward to getting into the programming side of things on them.  I got a chance last week to observe some programming tests on a Tanaka 3 axis industrial laser that was bigger than some houses I have lived in over the years.

Still here, any how...filling in the gaps, and putting things together.  Dealing with the enemies this time around in the comic...and filling in the pieces on a number of things that I know that people who have gamed in this world have always been wondering about..or came up with the wrong explanations for.  Comic is uploaded for tomorrow by the way...at least I am on a section that is relatively easy to pull off for once.  The recent underground railroad staion I had to put together was a nightmare.  I worked okay comic-wise...but it still isn't quite what I wanted in the end.

Oh [livejournal.com profile] meteru ?  You really need to head over to Vanishing Point and check out their marketplace for Poser models and stuff.  There are a number of things over there that I havent seen anywhere else.  One thing of interest is a whole series of trains (engines, boxcars, tankers and the like)  From what I can see they look absolutely awesome.

Need all kinds of things right now...soda, cigarette and sleep in that exact order.  It's too much to ask for a total lack of pain in my feet as well.

Lot of cleaning house tonight...
Lot of redesigning...

(The first part of this post is Google Food...if you have no interest in the fine points of digital modeling....feel free to skip this post)
As a test run of things, I just got done rebuilding the three currently active female characters in the comic right now.  Most people won't even see the difference, until they see the expressions.

What I did was combine the morphs from the V3 Newgen model with a standard V3 with expressions loaded in.  While I know that there are plenty of injection morphs out there for V3...the ones that are in the Newgen model are totally unique...and Newgen doesn't take standard morph channels at all.

I used a program that is available at the Morphography site (Kozaburos place) to combine the morphs from two different cr2 files into one final version.  The program is called Morph Manager and does work on the millennium series...and pretty much everything else I have tried out as well.  I also know that it is possible to transfer V3 morphs over to Aiko with this as well.

The reason why it works is that all of the morphs that are buried in a character that control things like whether the eyes are slanted or not...or expressions for that matter are actually scripts.  Morph Manager copies the scripts over to the .cr2 file that you wish it to.

I'll be trying this soon with the expressions out of V3 Newgen and moving them over to M3.

At any rate...figuring all of this stuff out was how I spent my 33rd birthday.  At least it was relatively interesting.

Sitting here in a dark house right now.  My cat has just gotten done with playing chase the tail on top of her scratching post, and has laid down to sleep.  The first snow is falling from what has been promised to be a real "winter storm".

Things to do tomorrow...lot of stuff to think about as well.  Need to get the dialog done for tomorrows comic....also need to update the news ticker for Requiem as well.

Shoulder feels like somebody took a cheese grater to my rotator cup right now, other than that I'm okay.  Other than that, what else is there to say?  The Christmas season is approaching....and thanksgrieving is thankfully over.  Hopefully, everybody I give a damn about makes it through the holidays okay.

On a Piers Anthony kick tonight....

I ended up having an idea for a set of companion pieces to the cover art for the Incarnations of Immortality series...This could end up fun at the very least.  Just knocked out Zane and Norton (Death and Chronos) tonight...working on another piece that came to mind a little while back as well.  These two won't be for sale of course (couldn't do it if I wanted to...I don't own the characters)...this one is just for fun.  Both of them are currently up over at Deviant Art right now.  If you are interested in checking them out...the links section has a link to the DA stuff.  So far, it looks like today is going to be a three piece day by the time it ends.

Oh and [livejournal.com profile] meteru ?  Has anybody figured out the big secret yet? ;)

Bought Wardrobe Wizard today...I am already doing some test runs with it, and it will be definitely going into the production line here soon. :)

Tunnelrunners is done for Monday....comics for Sunday are in the pipeline right now.

Cruxshadows on the iPod right now...media center computer is in pieces right now so it can be moved tomorrow.  I'm on the my workhorse right now, while Wardrobe Wizard percolates in the background.  There are some limitations to it, but what it does with careful planning it does remarkably well.  Of course the one thing you are limited to is the quality of the model...the better it is, the better the import.  It's something that I am gonna have to play around with mosr definitely.  So far though it is definitely worth it.

Half ass drizzle and cold wind outside the window right now, the tail end of September is doing it's best November impersonation right now.  Everything mapped out and squared away for the most part...except for the big things that never get resolved, they just get dealt with.

Back to work, I need soda.
maximkovalenko: (Default)
Tired as hell...have Renderosity commitments due in 48 hours, plus my regular art load.  My vision is getting fuzzy and the nicotine is doing an absolutely rotten job of keeping me awake.

And now here I am, like a complete and total idiot...dealing with an idea that just popped into my head for an unassociated piece of art, and a story idea for a short story collection that somebody is working on putting together. As for the story idea, I'm thinking of dealing with the Drowned Cathedral...those of you who have been following some of my stuff know what I'm talking about.  As for the art?  I'm still chasing that thread:  but my inner eyes keep seeing a picture of an angel standing in the water. If there is one thing I miss about leaving Bryce for Carrara it's the water.  It always seemed to methat Bryce did water textures easier, and far cooler than anything else.  It may have not been realistic all the time, but it sure as hell looked neat.

At any rate,  I'm running the cloth simulation on it right now...I figure that would be safe enough to do before I go to bed.

When my muse came back, it came back full tilt it seems.
maximkovalenko: (headdesk)
How come needed postwork only seems to show up when you have an image at 6000*9000 pixels in size?

God....what a chore....

And I still have to do the comic for Monday too yet.  Im at 83% and counting right now, and I don't know whetherI should stop this and rerender this tomorrow...or postwork the thing from the finshed image.  It's an absolutely frustrating thing.

A lot of this thing took a whole hell of a lot longer than I thought it was going to.  Part of the problem was rendering hair...the other problem was a grandfather clock with a glass paneled door in it's front.  I ended up dealing with about three multiple reflections per object based on the angle of the light and the glass.

The other problem is that there are actual flaws in the model that are only showing up at this kind of intense clear magnification.  In a normal situation, you would never notice them....However at the type of resolution I am dealing with for print work, errors in the polygon mesh are actually showing up (for [livejournal.com profile] meteru's information...I'm seeing errors in the polygon mesh of Victoria 3's hands.)

87% and counting right now...and I think I'm gonna say to hell with it and try to "fix it in the mix"

Argh...and further more, argh again.

We got another print up over at DeviantArt....

You can check it out at http://www.deviantart.com/print/378839/

It's nice to be doing something productive again :)
maximkovalenko: (bill hicks)
There are prints coming.

I've been mulling over this for a while now, and I have finally gotten my brain together enough to start putting together prints of some of the Requiem stuff, and associated art.  The first two that are being put together right now are Abandoned v2.0 and Shower Girl

At any rate others will soon become available as well.

Have any requests?
Take a look at the stuff that is up at http://requiemcomic.googlepages.com/home and over at Renderosity and let me know what you would like to see.  There ar a lot of pieces of panels and settings that I think would make some very interesting poster and prints, but since this is a first time for me I'd like your input as well.

Thanks and enjoy.

I just got done doing a great deal of testing and research involving Poser mat files, and Carrara.;  Currently it is impossible to transplant a Poser procedural texture into Carrara.  You can take the mat pose type of thing over (like V3 dress textures and such...)  however...the mat room textures are unaccessible with the current version of the Transposer plugin.

The one loophole that I could possibly come up with was actually creating a MAT pose with the Ajax Material from the effects section and hand editing it from a a cr2 to a ppz file.  Even with the material added in and converted over to a map, it won't work.  I even tried uncompressing the .mtz file and converting it over to a .mt5.

Still no soap.

I came up with something that may work based off a rendered image of the material in question that I slapped onto a High Resolution cloth pane.  However...the render times that I have seen so far with something like this appear to be nothing short of monstrous.

Still the testing goes on...

With comics backlogged for a while...tonight is a practice night.

Coming up with tattoo's for a future character.  Need some cool designs for some facial work...any body have any ideas?

The idea that Windows XP will only address up to 2 gigs of virtual memory, no matter how much is on your machine is an idea I find to be infuriating.  Oh, XP can be hacked to allow more certainly...but if you have let's say 4 gigs of  Virtual RAM in computer...it should be able to actually use it.  It's a rare occasion that anyone would actually need it...but I know that I have had renders cut short because of suddenly running out of RAM (and I have two gigs of physical memory and a 4 gig page file setup.)

The three gig startup switch, how to set it...and how to cover your self if something messes up with it.

It's not something that will get used much I think...at least not now...but when I upgrade to a 4 gig machine someday, I will have to hack this in order to handle some very large scenes.

In Carrara 5 we have been having import problems with Poser lighting,  well I figured out how to fix it.

Go through your object list and look at the General tab for each object (right hand side of the screen)

You should see the setting for the shaders/material that is being used...right above it you should see a group of 4 check boxes.  Uncheck the cast shadows box that is on the object that is blocking the imported Poser lights.

Voila, problem solved.  Of course you may have to try out a few quick test runs to figure out where any problems are with interposing objects...but that shouldn't be too difficult.

One section of what is turning into the big showdown in River Crossing Territory is coming to an end.  THis section has been an utter and complete nightmare.  Graphically, it looks great, but right now I am definitely pushing my machine to the absolute limit of what it can do.

My problem, as always, is I think to big.  I spread things out...I look at things so much from the "massive landscape viewpoint" that I keep filling things up with stuff that probably most people would never notice.  Of course, my problem is that I would notice if I left it out in the first place. ;)

Because of this though, Requiem has been averaging a development time of approximately 10-12 hours per strip over the last week.  Normally, it runs around 3-4 per strip.  For a comparison, Tunnelrunners took me about 45 minutes to put togetherthis morning, and that was with some custom texture work to make somebody look scruffy/dirty/muddy.

And so it fucking goes....

Will be tossing some more stuff in the novels mixmaster tonight before I crash...I've had a lot of stuff to get done with comic wise and writing (book writing) ended up taking second place out of neccessity.  Cool night though, windows open....nothing noisy outside.  Perfect night to get back to thinking about the end of the world.

Oh...to answer a question that I have been asked a few times:  Requiem will be done someday an actual typewritten work.  This novel I'm plugging away at on the side right now is kind of the warm up to that.

I love Requiem and the story up in my head about it...but I am absolutely dreading trying to novelise that bitch.  After looking over my notes and what I already have jotted down here and there...we'll be looking at something along the lines of the Nights Dawn Trilogy when it comes to size.  That kinda makes me jumpy.
maximkovalenko: (Default)
Well I finally broke down and tried out DAZ Studio version 1.0 for graphics work tonight.

You see, when DAZ setup Bryce 5.5 they designed the DAZ studio program to be able to allow you to import your Poser figures directly into your Bryce scenes.  The idea is that you set up a linkage between the Daz file and the Bryce file, and when you move the Poser object within DAZ it shows correctly, and with the correct textures and such in Bryce when it all renders out.

Well friends and neighbors.....they fucking nailed it.

After seeing the absolutely spawned in hell debacles that were the previous versions of DAZ Studio, I wouldn't have believed it was possible.  Now with the newest update to Bryce (5.5C) and Daz 1.0, I can finally see what they were driving at.

It works...It bloody well works.....

It's going to take some adjustments to my work flow to get this stuff into the production process of course....and it won't replace everything I do by a long shot....but for certain things?  It may very well end up being a god send.

Right now, I am testing it out on the hardest figure I have to deal with (Julia Wells.)  She's a great character, but with the amount of parameters that have to be used  to get her to look right, clothing can be a real issue.  But from what I am seeing from the preliminary results...I wish I would have had this setup like this a lot earlier.  There would have been a lot of pieces in the comic (Mainly the up the river section that was done earlier), that would have been done a whole hell of a lot differently.

I am in process of trying this out with Ian and Julia for an upcoming scene in the comic.  Results will be posted later.

Now there are things that I can't do in this of course.  I haven't figured out how to cloth the figures within DAZ Studio yet....but I think it may be possible.  Even if it isn't I can still bring everything over from a basic setup in Poser 6 and do my posing and rendering here.

Ultimately for a color blind person such as myself it means one simple, beautiful thing.  No more games of russian roulette as I try to match colrs and lighting between two different rendering engines from two different programs.

A whole new world has opened up for me when it comes to landscapes and such and yes people...I am fucking stoked!!!!

The preview of this is up at......

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/23753629/

And you will be seeing this in the comic rather soon I think....Oh yes...soon indeed.art

When I came up with the idea of doing multiple  layers within Poser 6 in order to duplicate the look of people walking and interacting down a city street...Why the hell didn't I smack myself silly before I started trying to DO it?
